Good Friday Meaning
There is always a lot of talk around the name ‘Good Friday’. Many argue that nothing good or positive is associated with it. There are numerous interpretations to describe the meaning of Good Friday and its inception. Some beliefs represent the name being altered to Good Friday from ‘God’s Friday’. As quoted by Fiona MacPherson, the senior editor of the Oxford English Dictionary to BBC, Good Friday is a “day (sometimes season) on which religious observance is held”. Also, the good thing can be indicated in a way that Jesus patiently survived the punishment and triumphed.
History of Good Friday
As per the depictions in the Gospels, the history of Good Friday commences with Judas Iscariot (a discipline of Jesus). The disciples crossed him for 30 silver pieces and got him captured. Following the arrest, he was taken to the house of Annas for interrogation. His answers didn’t sit right with them, which led to the announcement of his imprisonment by Caiaphas.
The high priests after this stated this quote "I adjure you, by the Living God, to tell us, are you the Anointed One, the Son of God?” They then told Jesus to take the ceremonious oath, which he declared, ”You have said it, and in time you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Almighty, coming on the clouds of Heaven.”
Jesus was presented in front of Roman Governor Pontius Pilate the following morning, and accused of crimes like failing to pay taxes to Caesar, disrupting the nation, and declaring to be a ruler. The Jewish leaders were given the power to determine the penalty, which resulted in death sentence. But this was annulled as Jews didn’t hold the authority to give a death sentence. With the course of time, it was elucidated that Jesus had taken birth in Galilee and so, they handed over this case to King Herod of Galilee.
As King Herod also found no success in his interrogation, he sent Jesus back to Pilate for judgement. Pilate decided to release Jesus due to lack of evidence. This made the chief priests angry and they called for the death sentence for Jesus as he had accepted being the “God’s son”. Although claiming to be not guilty, Jesus offered himself to the public in the anticipation of riots occurring. “The place of Skull” was where he was crucified being labelled as the Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”. The whole region was believed to have been engulfed in darkness. His last week was said to bring about an earthquake along with tombs and temples getting destroyed. This led to the celebration of Good Friday.
