Sakat Chauth 2026: Date, Time, Puja Vridhi and Vrat Significance

One of those fasts that carries quite an intensity is Sakat Chauth. It is observed in devotion to Lord Ganesha and Sakat Mata, and is majorly kept by women for the long life and well being of their child. The vrat is stern without any intake or consumption of food or water. Nothing until the moon is seen at night. While the fast is extremely challenging, it is deeply meaningful.

It is believed that observing Sakat Chauth helps protect children from any troubles in life and bestows the divine blessings of Lord Ganesha. Many also view it as a way to steer clear of obstacles and welcome stability in the family.

Sakat Chauth 2026 date: Sakat Chauth will be observed on Tuesday, January 6

Sakat Chauth 2026 tithi and moonrise time: The tithi starts at 08:01 AM on January 6, 2026 and ends at 6:52 AM on January 7, 2026. The Moonrise on Sakat Chauth day is projected at 08:54 PM.

The fast is broken after moonrise, following proper worship.

Why is Sakat Chauth observed?

This vrat is not only about fasting. It is said to bring peace, protection and progress. Devotees believe it helps lessen the inauspicious effects of Mercury and supports success in workplace and personal endeavours. Praising Moon God and Lord Ganesha on this pious day is considered quite powerful. Many women across the nation observe this fast year after year, relying on its ability to protect their children from all kinds of trouble.

Step by Step Process to Perform Chath Puja

  • The day starts early. Wake up before the sunrise then take a bath and wear fresh clothes.
  • Lord Ganesha is worshipped with devotion followed by the chanting of mantras. The Sakat Chauth Vrat Katha is then read or listened to with full focus.
  • Ladoos or modak made with sesame seeds are usually the offerings for the day.
  • Ganesha chalisa if possible is also recited slowly with complete attention.
  • The Moon God is worshipped at night. The fast is broken after moonrise, first with water and then with a simple food (vegetarian).
