Raksha Bandhan, observed on Purnima of the Shravan month of the Hindu calendar, is a festival that honours the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters on this day tie a rakhi on their brothers’ wrists and pray for their well being, while brothers give gifts and promise to protect their sisters. However, apart from choosing an auspicious time to tie the rakhi, many families also check the Panchang for Bhadra Kaal. As per Hindu tradition, auspicious ceremonies like tying a rakhi are usually avoided when Bhadra is present.

What is Bhadra Kaal?

According to Hindu mythology, Bhadra is associated with Vishti Karana, one of the Karanas or divisions used in traditional Hindu timekeeping. When Vishti Karana falls, that period is generally referred to as Bhadra Kaal. 

As per traditional belief, Bhadra Kaal is not seen favourable for starting auspicious activities. This is why families avoid performing Raksha Bandhan rituals during the Bhadra Kaal . 

Who is Bhadra?

As per traditional stories, Bhadra is the daughter of Surta Dev and Chaaya and the sister of Shani Dev. Bhadra is depicted as having a fierce nature. According to the legend, she would cause disturbances and interfere with auspicious activities like yagnas, havanas and other ceremonies. Bothered by her behaviour, Surya Dev reached out to Lord Brahma in search for a solution.  

The origin of Bhadra in Panchang

According to the legend, Lord Brahma allocated Bhadra certain periods during which she can exert her influence rather than allowing her to cause disruptions at auspicious activities at all times. 

Her presence was later linked with Vishti Karana in the Panchang. According to traditional astrology, Bhadra resides at specific times in Swarga or heaven, Prithvi or Earth, and Patal or hell.  It is believed that auspicious occasions or activities should be avoided when Bhadra is residing on Earth.

The reason behind avoiding rakhi during Bhadra Kaal

Since Bhadra Kaal is considered unsuitable for auspicious activities, tying a rakhi during this period is usually avoided. As per religious beliefs, performing any auspicious ritual during Bhadra may lead to problems and this is why families traditionally refrain from performing Rakshabandhan rituals during the Bhadra Kaal. 

Rather than scientifically proven effects, it is rooted in religious beliefs and traditions that consider Bhadra Kaal an inauspicious time for beginning anything auspicious.

Raksha Bandhan 2026

Raksha Bandahan this year will be observed on Friday, August 28. The festival falls on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravan.

As per the provided Panchang details, Purnima Tithi ends at 09:48 AM on August 28. Since Panchang timings can slightly vary based on the location and calendar followed, devotees may want to check their local Panchang before performing any ritual. 

Is there Bhadra Kaal on Raksha Bandhan 2026?
