Kumbha Sankranti is observed when the Sun is in transit from Makar to Kumbha Rashi. It is the beginning of the eleventh month as per the Hindu Solar calendar. The auspicious timing of the day is limited and almost alters every year due to the position of the sun. It is the day where one the largest religious festivals is held in one place called the Kumbha Mela. Millions and millions of people come in to take Holy bath in water of the Ganga River to eradicate all evil and sins of the past. 

Various Hindus all across the country celebrate Kumbha Sankranti, but people mostly in Eastern India do it with great enthusiasm. It begins the Falgun Maas for the people of West Bengal and as per the Malayalam calendar, it is a festival called Masi Masam. Devotees go to the Holy cities of Haridwar, Prayagraj, Ujjain and Nasik and pray to the God for good luck, health, prosperity and happiness in life.   

Rituals of the Day

On the auspicious occasion of Kumbha Sankranti, people should donate all sorts of food, clothing items and other necessities to the Brahmin Pandits. It is very propitious to take bath in the holy water of the River Ganga on this day as it is believed that this will help you achieve Moksha. 

The devotees must pray with a clean heart and meditate to Goddess Ganga for a happy and wealthy life. People, who for some reason cannot visit the banks of river Ganga can also take bath in rivers like Godavari, Yamuna and Shipra. Cow offerings on Kumha Sankranti are considered pious and favourable to the devotee.

The Kumbha Mela is observed once in every dozen years in Holy places like Haridwar, Prayagraj and Godavari River in Nasik. The motive of taking a dip in any of these holy places is to clean oneself of any kind of sin. And it is not just men but women also in equal numbers partake in this ritual on this sacred day.
