Nirjala Ekadashi is viewed as the most sacred and spiritually rewarding Ekadashis observed throughout the year. Also known as Bhima Ekadashi or Pandava Ekadashi, the highly auspicious day falls on Ekadashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshta. What makes it distinctive is the stern observance of fasting without food or even water, making it one of the most difficult yet beneficial Hindu fasts.

What is Nirjala Ekadashi?

Nirjala is derived from two words Nir (without) and Jala (water), meaning without water. Devoted to Lord Vishnu, this Ekadashi is believed to grant the spiritual perks of observing all twenty four Ekadashis of the year. Devotees observe this day worshipping Lord Vishnu and adhering to a strict fast without any food or water.

It is because of the immense spiritual significance that Nirjala Ekadashi is viewed as one of the most powerful days for seeking divine blessings.

Importance of Nirjala Ekadashi

Nirjala Ekadashi holds a special spot in the Hindu tradition. It is because of its stern observance and deep spiritual benefits. It is believed that people who observe this vrat sincerely with complete devotion receive the goodness of all other Ekadashi fasts combined. 

Bhima, the second of the Pandava brothers is closely associated with the day. Not able to observe every Ekadashi due to his huge appetite, Bhima sought guidance from Sage Vyasa. The sage told him to observe a single Nirjala Ekadashi fast, which would provide him with all the Ekadashi benefits. Since then, this holy day has also been called Pandava Nirjala Ekadashi. 

Vrat Katha: The Story Behind Nirjala Ekadashi

As per the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Bhima approached Sage Vyasa and told him about his difficulty of regular fasting. Taking Bhima’s situation into consideration, Vyasa suggested him to observe Nirjala Ekadasha once a year by avoiding water and food both for an entire day.

Hesitant at first, Bhima learned that this vrat carried the spiritual benefit of all Ekadashi observances. Encouraged by this, he absorbed the fast with full devotion. Happy with his persistence and dedication, Lord Vishnu bestowed him with prosperity and spiritual upliftment. This holy connection is why Nirjala Ekadashi is usually referred to as Bhimaseni Ekadashi.

Rituals of Nirjala Ekadashi

To properly observe the vrat devotees follow these rituals:

• Wake up during Brahma Muhurat and take a bath.
  Offer flowers to Lord Vishnu’s idol that should be dressed in yellow. 

• Chant Vishnu mantras, Vishnu Sahasranama throughout the day.

• Offer fruits, sweets and Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu.

• Visit a Vishnu temple if possible.

• Observe or host a night vigil (Jagran) with bhajans and other spiritual activities. 

• End the fast on Dewadashi after offering prayers and drinking water or Panchamrit.
